PhD Counseling Intern

About Gerard
(he/him)

Picture
I genuinely believe in the effectiveness of sharing a safe counselor / client space free of judgement, full of compassion, driven by empathy, and guided by your resilience and goals.

I value intentionally seeking supportive moments when experiencing life’s inescapable challenges.

I am interested in the intersections of mental health and physical health within the framework of existentialism.

Full Bio

After earning my undergraduate degree in Criminology at the University of New Mexico (UNM), I continued on as a Lobo by attaining my graduate degree from UNM in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2015.  Currently, I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a doctoral student in UNM’s Counselor Education program.  My counseling experience involves working with children, couples, and individual clients in both private agency and community clinic settings, and working as a co-facilitator for psychoeducation groups in local public schools.

Uniquely, my journey as a counselor has run concurrently with my journey as a public servant.  Although, I had professional stints as a wildland firefighter and EMT, I was ultimately drawn to police work.  I recently retired as a police Commander, and have completed Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command. Although I was super fortunate to work with some amazing people and have some invaluable experiences spanning 20 years in law enforcement, my time as a narcotics supervisor, working with community groups, connecting with folks experiencing crisis, constantly trying to be a good beat officer, and the experiences of building cohesive teams all stand out as the most meaningful moments for me.

I grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut and Farmington, New Mexico before settling down here in Albuquerque.  I am married to the love of my life, have two young children, one dog, three ducks, two birds, and three fish! After playing a ton of basketball, I have embraced the suffering of competing in triathlons during mid-life! As a family, we really enjoy traveling, camping, fishing, swimming, biking, and hanging out with our animals and extended family.
